What to wear on your photoshoot session

Why does it matter what clothes you wear?

When you have a photography session, your outfit choice is a super important aspect. It can make such a huge difference, so i'm going to try to break it down to help you get the most out of your choice(s), and with that your session too.

An outfit can completely change the tone and potential of a session. Lets think about dresses, for example: a tight fitting short dress is going to be perfect for showing off silhouettes and will give a sultry, sexy vibe, but you're not going to have an awful lot of movement and posing options will be more limited. On the other hand, a floaty floral midi-dress is going to give more of a cute & dainty boho vibe and allow for much more movement (in both yourself and the images).

Who's taking part in the session?

Whilst solo-sessions require a well-thought outfit for all of the reasons explained in this post, it's even more important when there's 2+ people in the frame at once.

The only thing you have to really consider on a solo-session is your background and the kind of vibe you want to achieve, but when you've got other people involved too, it's important that you're not too matching or clashing (unless that's specifically what you're going for of course). On sessions with 2+ people, I recommend trying to stay away from patterns and choosing complimenting (but not the same) colours. This keeps the viewer's focus on you rather than on distracting clothes.

Comfort is key

The most important aspect of your outfit has to be that you feel completely confident & comfortable in it. If you're too hot or cold, feel too exposed or even restricted if you've got on too many layers on, it's very likely to show on camera - not what we want. Sessions can be quite fast paced and they fly by so quickly, the last thing we need is to be spending time on wardrobe concerns.

In addition to this, make sure to plan ahead. Often sessions take place in more remote areas which require walking to (anywhere between 5-30 minutes). In instances where terrain may not be the best, it's advisable to bring shoes you can easily walk in, and then different footwear for the actual shoot (If you wanted to wear heels or dress shoes, for example). The same goes for layering up when it's cold. Sometime's you might want to wear a more revealing outfit, but our British weather doesn't support the decision. In these cases you're best to layer up until we actually start shooting, and then you can get warm again after too.

The background is more important than you might think

When you arrange a shoot with me, you'll have the opportunity to choose any location you'd like. Or if you don't have any particular preference, we can use a location recommended by me based on the kind of aesthetic you'd like to achieve. Either way, the location will be agreed upon before the session, giving ample time to plan accordingly.

When choosing your outfits, you want to think about what colours & patterns might be in the background and pick colours that will stand out and compliment them. You want to find the sweet spot between clashing and blending with the background.

For instance, if we're shooting in a forest with a lot of greenery you might want to avoid wearing greens or dark clothing as you'll risk blending in. Good options in this instance would be white, red, or light neutral tones.

The potentials are limitless

No clothing choices are wrong, but really it entirely depends on what you want to achieve from your session.

If you have a session booked with me and you're at all unsure on what to wear, or even if you think you've decided but you want a second opinion before the day, please send me a message across on any of my social media platforms or via Email.
